I think a disc conversion shaves a lot off Mogs, the drums aren't light.

there isnt much in it really.

rob tunnah has put the mog boxes on to a landy axle iirc, diddnt get a good look it was on the roof of his office when i was there. if you welded some 404 flanges on you could do it by machining the shafts down to suite the diff.

your looking at adding between 10-12 inches on each corner if you do this with out cutting the axle tube down.

you are also talking about putting portal boxes on an axle that wasnt designed to have them. they produce alot of twist on an axle tube and i wouldnt like to say weather or not theyll be ok.

It has been a very difficult decision for me, but I think it is for the best I let her find a new owner...

I'm sure you all know her, but here goes:
Protoclass racer, RRC based, built in 2008, durable and light. (4th place Ladoga 2008, 6 place Vepsskiy Lev 2008). Motor LS2, 450 hp (gasoline), 5-speed manual, Volvo portal axles with disk brakes, the steering tips of ZIL, Bogger 39,5x18 on Stazworks. High-speed hydraulic winches front and rear (speed to 30+ m/min with the load 6000 kgf).

Greetz,

Filip

all valid points!

if i could find a set of volvo portals i'd have them. So cheap unimogs are second best.

just trying to lose weight on the rig,

Ah whatever  thefinger the guy was talking about UniMog axles anyway, or at least their drop-boxes. Welding XYZ portal boxes onto a different axle has been a regular question around the interweb for quite some time, very few people have ever done it and how successful they were / how much the project cost is never really mentioned.

I reckon if you welded a Mog end to a Land Rover axle case it would sag at the ends before you'd even attached it to the car.

i think FF has his +/- in revers lets hope he stops thiis at wheels and not into his field of sparks and smoke. but i know what he means, S.I.A. most people tend not to run the std volvo rims from my experience thus widening track. i think this is what he is getting at?  Huh?

I think that standard Volvo portal rims already have 100% positive offset.

So, you can't really make them narrower by putting more positive offset on the wheels, can you?

Unless you are talking about different wheels to begin with, such as LR, with the portal axles modded so they suit the different stud pattern.

(more negative offset would make them wider, more positive offset moves the rims/tyres more to the inside to make them narrower)

I have this issue with my Volvo portals, and may have to have the axle tubes cut and shortened, along with custom shorter inner axles, to get them through rego.

Does any of that stuff really work out any cheaper, easier, or better than just throwing a pair of Mogs or Volvos on? It's not like you gain a LOT of width, and you can solve the worst of that (if it's even a problem) by getting wheels with a negative offset.
